Trump calls NATO allies ‘cowards’ over Hormuz inaction

Washington's isolation deepens as European allies refuse to join the naval operation.

Donald Trump lashed out at NATO allies, calling them “cowards” for refusing to send warships to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The tirade came hours after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly stated that the UK “will not be drawn into the wider war.”

Greece, one of the world’s largest tanker fleet operators, also announced it would not participate in military operations at the strait. Germany and France are seeking direct negotiations with Tehran for safe passage of their vessels.

Trump argued that the Hormuz “should be guarded by other nations who use it,” suggesting the US might simply walk away from the issue after completing its military objectives in Iran.

“Most allies opposed this war from the start, which makes them less inclined to support it,” said Rodger Shanahan, a Middle East security analyst at Al Jazeera.
