In a joint effort to prevent a regional catastrophe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa emphasized that ensuring nuclear security is now the foremost priority to avoid further destabilization.

The EU’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, highlighted the specific risks associated with missile technology and Iran’s nuclear program in light of the coordinated strikes by the U.S. and Israel. While maintaining its sanctions regime against Tehran, the bloc is currently focusing its efforts on coordinating support for EU citizens remaining in the region.

National governments within the bloc are also taking defensive measures. French authorities have issued “extreme caution” advisories to their citizens and confirmed that the French military is adapting its posture to protect critical installations amidst the current escalation.

The European leadership maintains that diplomacy remains the only viable path to de-escalate a situation that threatens global energy and security markets.
