In an act that exposes the extreme fragility of freedom of expression within private platforms, Meta deactivated the official Instagram account of Diário Carioca this Tuesday (10th). Without providing concrete reasons, technical justifications, or offering any real channel for appeal, the tech giant silenced years of journalistic work with a single click.
The attack was not limited to the institution: the personal profile of Editor JR Vital was also taken down. For the newspaper’s leadership, there are no coincidences; this is a coordinated censorship movement orchestrated by digital militias who use social media reporting systems as a political weapon.

The complicit silence of algorithms
“This is a typical case of censorship,” says JR Vital. “Because the newspaper is combative and operates on the front lines against the global far-right, the ‘hate cabinet’ made us a priority target. Meta simply complied with the reports without verifying their validity and, worse, without stating exactly why. Years of work have been flushed away by the convenience of an algorithm.”
The episode reignites the debate over the disproportionate power of Big Tech. By allowing baseless reports to topple established media outlets, platforms become complicit in disinformation, permitting “hate cabinets” to dictate who can or cannot have a voice in the public sphere.
Legal measures and editorial resistance
Diário Carioca officially states that it is taking all necessary legal measures to regain access and demand transparency from Meta. The newspaper’s legal department points out that suspending a public interest account without due process or the right to defense violates basic principles of the Brazilian Constitution and the Internet Civil Framework.
While the legal battle unfolds, the newspaper will not retreat. Operations continue through a secondary resistance account.

The newspaper knows it is not the first, nor will it be the last, to suffer from Big Tech censorship. However, this attempt at silencing only reinforces DC’s commitment to fighting authoritarianism—be it political or technological.
