Brazilian farmers left out of the State’s aid policies turn to Congress for help

- Publicidade -

In this week’s What’s Happening in Brazil we delve into the crisis being faced by family farmers during the pandemic. Ignored by the state, a plethora of rural social movements hatched up a bill that was introduced to Congress, seeking help for the sector. The proposal is set to be voted on next week.

In our Culture Talk segment, we take a look at how the havoc brought about by the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the historically fragile cinema industry in the country. Facing budget cuts, the dismantling of institutions, and even political persecution by the Jair Bolsonaro government, filmmakers in the country struggle to keep the industry alive.

Our Story of the Week showcases a combined effort by athletes and sporting figures, to stand up for democracy and break the old taboo that sports shouldn’t be politicized. Well known personalities like TV sports hosts, Olympic medalists, as well as retired football legends, have come together to denounce the recent attacks on democratic institutions and on democracy itself.

On this week’s show you will also be introduced to an icon of the Brazilian indigenous struggle, who recently died of covid-19, highlighting the devastating nature of the pandemic on the vulnerable and forgotten native communities.

Finally, as is our tradition, we end the show by teaching you a delectable local recipe and playing some Brazilian tunes for our audience.
