Brazil surpasses 21.6 million covid infections, but cases continue to fall

Brazil registered 14,288 infections by covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of positives to 21,612,237, at a time when the pandemic continues to decline in the country, with systematic falls since last June, the Government reported on Thursday.

Rio de Janeiro, Oct 14 (EFE) .- Brazil registered 14,288 infections by covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of positives to 21,612,237, at a time when the pandemic continues to decline in the country, with systematic falls since last June, the Government reported on Thursday.

As for the deaths, the country already accumulates 602,099 fatalities due to the virus, after adding 525 deaths in the last day, according to the most recent balance of the Ministry of Health.

The figures confirm Brazil as the second country in the world with the most deaths from the virus, after the United States, and the third in number of infections, behind the US and India. However, since June the pandemic has slowed down.

The data released today by the Health Ministry are well below the records that the country had in April and June of this year when more than 4,000 deaths and about 115,000 positives were registered in a single day, respectively.

The daily average of deaths of the last week, stood on Wednesday at 323, a figure that was not seen since November, and the average of infections stood today at 11,383, something that did not happen since May.

The drop in the number of deaths and infections is attributed by experts to the advances in the vaccination campaign.

According to the Ministry of Health, of the 213 million inhabitants in Brazil, 70% have already received the first dose of the vaccine and 47% already have the complete immunization schedule.
