US bombs Kharg Island, Iran’s oil export lifeline

Kharg Island handles 90% of Iranian crude exports and is now under direct fire.

The United States launched airstrikes against Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export terminal responsible for approximately 90% of the country’s crude sales. Trump framed the bombing as direct pressure to end the Strait of Hormuz blockade.

“Our weapons are the most powerful the world has ever known, but for reasons of decency, I chose not to destroy the oil infrastructure on the island,” Trump wrote, warning he might change his mind if Iran continues blocking maritime traffic.

The threat contains a built-in contradiction: destroying Kharg would eliminate Iran’s primary revenue source but also remove millions of barrels from the global market during a supply crisis, further spiking prices that already hurt American consumers.

The conflict has reached a stalemate where both sides possess instruments of mutually assured economic destruction.
