President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this Wednesday (1/4) an unprecedented diplomatic and military offensive in the Middle East. The move signals that Ukraine is not merely seeking survival, but global strategic relevance.
Cooperation is already yielding results with regional powers such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan. By expanding dialogue to Bahrain, Kuwait, and Iraq, alongside the historical partnership with Turkey, Kyiv is attempting to diversify its suppliers and allies at a time when Western support faces political fatigue. Zelensky’s chess move leverages the vacuum left by the polarization between the US, Israel, and Iran to offer defense technology tested in real combat.
This pivot toward the Levant and the Persian Gulf is not merely commercial. It is an attempt to stifle the Russian narrative in the Global South and create a belt of partnerships with countries that, historically, maintained neutrality or proximity to Moscow. For Ukraine, the Middle East has ceased to be a spectator to become a strategic arsenal and a stage for political legitimacy.
Kyiv’s technology as a bargaining chip
Ukraine has accumulated, over recent years, practical knowledge in drone warfare and anti-aircraft defense systems that few countries possess. For the Gulf monarchies, watching with dread the escalation of Iranian missiles and technologies, Ukrainian “know-how” is a valuable asset. Zelensky is not just selling weaponry; he is selling the experience of those who face one of the world’s greatest military powers daily.
A message to the Iran-Russia axis
By negotiating with Iraq and Kuwait, Ukraine enters directly into spheres of influence where Iran and Russia operate forcefully. Kyiv’s presence at these negotiation tables is a direct challenge to the supply of Iranian drones to Putin’s troops. If Iran assists Russia in Europe, Ukraine now seeks to strengthen Iran’s neighbors in the Middle East, balancing the international power play.
Turkey: the bridge between two worlds
The relationship with Ankara remains the sturdiest pillar of this expansion. Turkey, which already supplies the famous Bayraktar drones, acts as a mediator and logistical facilitator. The new negotiations cited by Zelensky suggest even greater integration in defense production chains, transforming the Black Sea and the Mediterranean into a continuous corridor of technical-military cooperation.
Impact on the US-Israel-Iran conflict
Ukraine inserts itself into an already inflamed scenario. The conflict involving Americans, Israelis, and Iranians has redesigned the defense needs of the region. By positioning itself as a reliable partner, Zelensky offers an alternative to countries seeking to modernize their forces without necessarily aligning fully with Washington’s political demands or the export restrictions of other powers.
Diplomacy of survival and profit
For the Ukrainian government, these partnerships guarantee not just weapons, but vital financial flows to maintain the war economy. The Middle East possesses the capital Kyiv needs to rebuild its industrial defense base. It is the transformation of an invaded nation into a geopolitical player that understands that, in the new world disorder, security is the most valuable commodity.
Will Ukraine manage to maintain balance in these alliances without being swallowed by the millenary rivalries of the Middle East?
