The city of Shreveport, in northwest Louisiana, is grappling with one of the most devastating tragedies in its history. On the morning of Sunday, April 19, 2026, a shooting stemming from a domestic dispute resulted in the deaths of eight children, aged 1 to 14, in the Cedar Grove neighborhood.

The incident occurred around 6:00 AM at a residence in the 300 block of West 79th Street. According to the Shreveport Police Department, ten people were shot in total. In addition to the eight deceased children, two women were injured—one of whom is in critical condition after being shot in the head.

Crime Dynamics and Pursuit

Police believe the shooter was the father of some of the victims. Following the massacre, the suspect carjacked a vehicle and fled toward the neighboring city of Bossier City. The escape triggered a police pursuit that ended in the 400 block of Brampton Lane.

A shootout ensued between officers and the suspect, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene. The Louisiana State Police, leading the investigation into the shooting, are still determining whether the gunman was killed by police fire or if he died by suicide.

Official Reactions

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux called the event “perhaps the most tragic situation” the city has ever faced. In an official statement, he appealed for community compassion and mutual support for neighbors and first responders who have been deeply shaken.

State leaders, including Attorney General Liz Murrill and the leaders of the Louisiana House and Senate, also issued statements of grief, pledging full support for the ongoing investigations.

Vigil and Community Support

The Shreveport City Council announced the organization of a community prayer vigil. Councilman James Green will hold a press conference this Monday (20th) at 11:00 AM to discuss support measures for the Cedar Grove community and assistance for the victims’ families.
