This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we continue the debate surrounding abortion in the country. Though legal in specific instances like rape, victims of abuse now have to make their cases public and suffer victim blaming from doctors. Furthermore, new rules set forth by the Bolsonaro government, literally put women’s lives at risk of retaliation from abusers.

In our Culture Talk segment, we investigate how trans persons, though protected by national law, still face discrimination and removal within the Brazilian armed forces. Brasil de Fato spoke to two trans officers who had to resort to the judicial system in order to enjoy their rights, serve their country, and be who they really are.

Our Story of the Week highlights the struggle of the brave men and women who make up the volunteer fire brigades battling the worst wildfires in the Brazil’s history. The Pantanal ecosystem is unique to Brazil, however, it is in danger of complete destruction due to large scale agricultural interests that purposely set fire to the native vegetation, in order to create space for pasture and industrial farming.

Lastly, our Braziliansim segment wraps things up with a delicious local recipe and a music video by a notorious Brazilian rapper.
