Egypt’s civil aviation sector locked in a robust performance during the first four months of 2026. Between January 1 and April 20, passenger traffic across the country’s airports reached the 8.7 million mark. The figure represents a 9% growth compared to the same period in 2025, when the indicator hovered around 8 million travelers, according to data from the Sada El-Balad portal, a partner of the TV BRICS network.
Mirroring the rise in user volume, the number of flight operations also logged a significant upward trajectory. Within the same timeframe, Egyptian terminals coordinated 65.5 thousand flights, a 10% increase over the previous year. Local authorities attribute this expansion directly to ongoing investments in upgrading airport infrastructure and a rising influx of international tourists.
Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh lead tourist resorts
Sun-and-sea tourism across coastal regions remained the primary engine for international arrivals. Among airports located in resort zones, Hurghada International Airport claimed the top spot by a wide margin, handling 3.5 million passengers, which translates to a 12% bump.
Shortly behind, Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport secured the second-highest overall volume. The Red Sea resort terminal registered 2.8 million passengers, ensuring an 11% year-over-year increase.
Upper Egypt surprises with jumps up to three digits
The biggest surprise in the 2026 sector balance came from Upper Egypt, a region home to the country’s main archaeological sites and inland business hubs. Passenger traffic in historical terminals surged dramatically:
- Abu Simbel: Growth of 74%.
- Luxor: Increase of 26%.
- Aswan: Expansion of 23%.
However, the fastest pace of percentage acceleration nationwide was tracked at Assiut Airport, which registered an impressive 136% spike. The metrics solidify the success of regional flight expansion and decentralization policies.
Egyptian airport performance by region
The consolidated data reveals a dynamic distribution of aviation growth among the country’s main destinations:
| Airport / Region | Passenger Volume | Growth (%) | Predominant Profile |
| Hurghada | 3.5 million | 12% | Leisure Tourism / Coastal |
| Sharm El-Sheikh | 2.8 million | 11% | Leisure Tourism / Resort |
| Assiut | Not specified | 136% | Regional & Business |
| Abu Simbel | Not specified | 74% | Historical & Cultural Tourism |
| Luxor | Not specified | 26% | Archaeological Tourism |
| Aswan | Not specified | 23% | Historical Tourism & Cruises |
The strong expansion of air routes toward the interior reaffirms that Egypt is successfully diversifying its tourism matrix beyond traditional beach resorts. Strengthening the flight network in Upper Egypt not only drives cultural mobility for travelers seeking dynastic temples but also boosts local economies by integrating new industrial and commercial hubs into the country’s logistical map.
