The Iranian government categorically denied on Sunday the existence of a new round of face-to-face negotiations with the United States, debunking statements made hours earlier by President Donald Trump. Authorities in Tehran labeled Washington’s announcement a “media stunt” designed to exert psychological pressure on the country.
According to the state news agency IRNA, the refusal to return to the bargaining table is due to demands considered excessive by the American government and a constant shift in posture from Washington’s negotiators. The Iranian government claims that no conditions for dialogue exist as long as the naval blockade of its ports and coastline—initiated last week—continues to be enforced.
Ceasefire Violation and the Strait of Hormuz
Tehran was emphatic in stating that the U.S. military blockade constitutes a direct violation of the fragile ceasefire mediated by Pakistan. For Iranian authorities, the disruption of maritime trade invalidates any previous diplomatic progress, turning negotiations into an instrument of coercion.
The current impasse centers on two critical axes showing no signs of resolution:
- Nuclear Program: Deep disagreements over uranium enrichment and international inspections.
- Control of Hormuz: Iran maintains its position that the Strait will remain closed to third parties as long as its own waters are blocked by the U.S.
Threats and Military Escalation
The Iranian refusal comes at a time of extreme volatility, immediately following the U.S. Navy’s seizure of the freighter Touska in the Gulf of Oman. With Donald Trump threatening to “disable” all Iranian civilian infrastructure (bridges and power plants) if American terms are not met, diplomacy seems to have given way to combat readiness.
As of now, neither Pakistan, the host nation, nor American negotiators JD Vance and Jared Kushner have confirmed if the trip to Islamabad will proceed in light of Tehran’s public denial.
