Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this Wednesday the completion of critical repairs to the Druzhba pipeline. The infrastructure returns to operation after months of paralysis caused by severe damage sustained during the 2025 military campaigns.

The resumption of the flow symbolizes a technical and logistical victory for the Kyiv government. Crude oil is once again flowing toward Central Europe, specifically supplying refineries in Hungary and Slovakia.

The official announcement took place during a briefing in Kyiv. Zelensky emphasized that minimum safety conditions were restored by Ukrainian engineers in record time, despite the proximity to active conflict zones.

Engineering under crossfire

The Druzhba pipeline, whose name ironically translates to “Friendship,” is one of the oldest and most vital arteries of the European energy network. In 2025, systematic attacks on infrastructure left the system inoperable, soaring import costs for landlocked nations.

Technical teams worked under constant surveillance and the threat of shelling. The reconstruction of specific sections required the import of specialized components, bypassing regional industrial material shortages.

The reactivation, however, is accompanied by a stern warning. The Ukrainian government admits that the risk of new attacks remains high, making the pipeline’s operation an exercise in calculated vulnerability.

The financial bargaining chip

Zelensky did not limit his statement to technical engineering achievements. He directly linked the operation of the Druzhba to the release of funds currently held in Brussels.

Presently, approximately €90 billion destined for Ukrainian assistance is blocked due to political and bureaucratic stalemates within the European Union. The Ukrainian president argues that the restoration of energy flow removes any remaining logistical or political barriers to the transfer.

For Kyiv, the oil supply serves as proof of good faith and institutional stability. The message to European leaders is clear: Ukraine is fulfilling its role as a guarantor of regional energy security.

Capacity and demands dossier

  • Repaired extent: Critical sections in Western and Central Ukraine.
  • Main recipients: Refineries in Hungary and Slovakia.
  • Disputed aid value: €90 billion in structural and defense funds.
  • Primary risks: New missile offensives and cyber sabotage.

Tactical impact and regional economy

The Druzhba reactivation provides immediate relief for energy prices in Central Europe. Budapest and Bratislava, which maintain complex relations with the Kyiv government, depend heavily on this infrastructure.

Analysts suggest that Zelensky is utilizing oil as a soft power tool. By ensuring the flow, he strips away arguments from European leaders who use energy instability to justify vetoing financial aid.

The table below details the flow projections and aid targets for the second quarter of 2026.

Flow Schedule and Financial Milestones

Operation PhaseFlow StatusEU Unblocking Target
April 2026Initial reactivation (40% capacity)€20 billion (Emergency Installment)
May 2026Pressure expansion (65% capacity)€35 billion (Reconstruction Fund)
June 2026Full operation (90%+ capacity)€35 billion (Direct Military Support)

The horizon of energy uncertainty

Despite the technical optimism, the geopolitical landscape remains volatile. Reliance on a pipeline traversing war-torn territory is a continuous dilemma for European Union security.

Moscow is closely monitoring the situation. Any future interruption could be attributed to external factors, maintaining pressure on global commodity markets.

Zelensky’s strategy is to transform the Druzhba into a political shield. If Europe receives the oil, Ukraine expects to receive the support necessary to sustain its economy in the long term.
